Walking/biking to school

Experts say kids should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. What better way to do that than walking or riding a bike to school?

Kids who are old enough (and responsible enough) to walk to school on their own should:

  • Wear brightly colored clothing.
  • Stick to a safe route, ideally one that has a crossing guard on it.
  • Look both ways before crossing a street or driveway.
  • Obey all traffic signs.
  • Say “no” if a stranger offers a ride. Yell or run for help if necessary.
  • Don’t text or talk on a cellphone while walking.

If on a bike, scooter, skateboard or other wheels of choice, kids need to wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road. According to HealthyChildren.org, those are:

  • Ride on the right, moving in the same direction as traffic. Use the bike lane if one is available.
  • Stop and look both ways before going on the street.
  • Stop and look before proceeding through an intersection.
  • Obey traffic lights and stop signs.
  • Use hand signals if turning.

COVID-19 at school

The COVID-19 pandemic is an evolving situation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention continues to recommend staying home if you or your child are experiencing symptoms. If you have questions or concerns, check with your local government and school district.
