FMCSA suspends HOS regs for trucks aiding Hurricane Sandy sites

Washington – Trucks directly providing aid to areas affected by Hurricane Sandy are temporarily exempt from hours-of-service regulations, according to a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration emergency declaration notice (.pdf file).

The exemption began Oct. 29 and ends when emergency supplies or services are no longer needed, or on Nov. 12 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern – whichever comes first – the emergency declaration notice states.

Truck drivers must carry a copy of the declaration to be exempt from HOS regulations. The exemption will expire immediately if the driver begins regular commerce operations after delivering emergency supplies. Truck drivers of motor carriers placed out-of-service are not eligible for exemption, according to the notice.
