Michaels, Howard pledge cooperation on PELs

OSHA administrator David Michaels said his agency has established an independent task force to study how best to update decades-old permissible exposure limits, and NIOSH Director John Howard has pledged his institute's support for that endeavor.

Speaking together in May at the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exposition in Denver, Michaels and Howard called the recent collaboration between their two agencies unprecedented," according to an American Industrial Hygiene Association press release.

In addition to finding the best way to update PELs, Michaels and Howard also expressed support for the formation of a federal clearinghouse for risk assessments to eliminate duplicate assessments by agencies, the release stated.
