Pediatricians' group: Mandate flu vaccines for health care workers

All health care personnel should receive mandatory influenza immunizations, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended in a policy statement.

Noting flu coverage among health care personnel is "unacceptably low" at 40 percent, Elk Grove Village, IL-based AAP said voluntary campaigns are not sufficient to increase immunization rates.

Mandatory immunization for health care personnel is "ethically justified, necessary and long overdue to ensure patient safety," according to the statement, which was published online Sept. 13 in the journal Pediatrics.
