Senate committee reviews motor carrier safety efforts
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration head Anne S. Ferro fielded a number of questions about the state of motor carrier safety during an April 28 hearing before the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
As members of the committee questioned the effectiveness of recently issued rulings, Ferro outlined a number of initiatives and programs underway. According to a record of her testimony, those include:
- A Nov. 30 deployment of the Comprehensive Safety Analysis 2010 initiative, with its new measurement system to help identify more high-risk carriers
- A stronger New Entrant Safety Assurance Program requiring a Corrective Action Plan
- More compliance reviews on motorcoach companies
- A final rule to establish a National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners to define minimum training and testing requirements
- Drafting a proposed rule to mandate reporting requirements for commercial driver's license holders who test positive for drugs or fail to comply with drug and alcohol testing requirements
- Partnerships with motor carriers to test and evaluate onboard safety systems
