When emergency responders head out on a call, they may not be able to visualize the types of dangers they’re heading into. One mobile app aims to change that.

The app, being developed by a British fire service, would allow callers to send live video of the scene to emergency responders who are en route.

It’s not hard to imagine how beneficial technology like this could be for emergency responders. When responding to a call, responders receive descriptions of the scene based on what people have told 911 operators. Right off the bat, emergency responders are potentially hampered by witnesses who may misinterpret or fail to relay important information. This can put emergency responders into a situation in which they are unprepared for the hazards they face, potentially placing them at risk of injury or death.

But if callers can simply stream video of the emergency to the responders, these workers will have a clear picture of what they are facing at the scene, and they can more adequately prepare.

Given the proliferation of smartphone use in the world, such technology could be immensely helpful. Here’s hoping it works well, and can be transplanted elsewhere around the globe.
