Washington — NIOSH, in conjunction with Wikipedia, has launched a yearlong campaign aimed at improving the free online encyclopedia’s content related to acoustics and the harmful effects of noise.

According to a Jan. 28 agency press release, NIOSH researchers will “write, update and maintain articles pertaining to sound” as part of the International Year of Sound 2020 – a global initiative to promote the importance of sound-related sciences and technologies.

Anyone with internet access is eligible to participate in the campaign. After creating a Wikipedia account, users can suggest or write new articles, improve existing articles, and translate submissions from other languages. Edits will be logged continuously and monitored through Dec. 31 via a campaign dashboard.
