Construction work is one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States, resulting in the deaths of nearly 1,000 workers every year. Most of those fatalities involve one of the "Focus Four" hazards. As the industry experiences another boom and the workforce grows, safety pros are focusing on training and engagement.
Silver Spring, MD – The Center for Construction Research and Training, also known as CPWR, has scheduled a free webinar for March 1 to help safety professionals prepare for the 2017 National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, set for May 8-12.
New York – Construction worker fatalities have been rising in New York City and throughout the state – and Latino workers are particularly at risk due to falls and willful violations – according to an annual report released Jan. 18 by the advocacy group New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health.
Between 2003 and 2013, falls were the leading cause of death in the construction industry, resulting in more than 3,500 fatalities, according to OSHA. During that time, falls from roofs made up roughly 34 percent of the deaths – all of which were preventable.
New York – The construction industry comprises less than 4 percent of employment in New York state, but it accounts for 20 percent of the state’s occupational fatalities, according to the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health.
OSHA provides resources including posters, videos and fact sheets to support local implementation of its May 4-15 national safety stand-down to prevent falls in construction.
Washington – OSHA hopes to reach about half of the nation’s construction workers through a two-week safety stand-down aimed at preventing falls – the leading cause of death in the construction industry.
