Maryland bill aimed at making work zones safer

Annapolis, MD — Legislation recently introduced in Maryland would allow multiple speed cameras in work zones and raise fines for speeding offenses.

Under the Maryland Road Worker Protection Act of 2024 (H.B. 513 and S.B. 479), fines for first-time speeding violations in work zones would increase to $290 from $40.

Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna K. Miller (D) told Baltimore-based WBAL-TV in a Jan. 18 report that the state would allocate additional revenue from speeding citations toward safety equipment and awareness campaigns.

“We just want to bring a culture change that any time you are near a work zone and you see those orange cones up and you see workers there with their hard hats on, immediately, it should go off in your head, ‘OK, I need to slow down,’” Miller said in the report.

The Senate bill has been referred to committee. A hearing on the House bill is scheduled for Feb. 15.

Maryland officials in November said an average of 3.5 work zone crashes occur in the state each day.
